HOW THE EAST WORKS WITH LIFE ENERGY TO STRENGTHEN THE BODY

Life is the work of energy Qi (Chi) means "life energy". When combined with the word Gong, which translates to "work", it takes on the meaning of perhaps the most important thing there is, that being life itself. What else could life be, other than the work of energy?

In the past, the term had another pronunciation "Tsi Ghun". You may have heard this form of the name, because the teachings of ancient China are very popular in the East, matching the popularity of Yoga.

According to Chinese medicine, our body has special channels called meridians. By way of the meridians, energy (Qi) passes through all parts of the body, bringing vitality and regulating the function of the organs. The body also has something called "energy reservoirs", where energy is stored. The entire body has 12 meridians and 8 reservoirs.

Although throughout the day our body's energy works regardless of whether we are thinking about it or not, during the time of our reviving practice, we consciously regulate the flow of energy through the body. We direct the energy ourselves, and this is precisely the work of Qigong. All of the physical and meditative exercises that we do during our practice help us bring order to our inner selves, attain a balance of energies, and ensure that all of our organs are working harmoniously. Harmoniously means that all parts of our body are working together to help each other function more efficiently, and this brings health and vitality to the whole body.

THE FOUNDATIONS OF ANCIENT CHINESE

RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

We are a part of life on earth

By learning Qigong, a person learns to regulate the vitality of their body. When order and balance is brought to the work of the body's organs, the body does not waste its forces and therefore creates a lot of positive energy. As a result, we become free of stress, are not afraid of obstacles, and we look at life's new possibilities with interest and motivation. When our energetic channels and knots are untangled, we improve our health and sense of well-being. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the understanding that a human being is part of nature. Nature's job is to support the work of a person's body in accordance with the rhythms of the surrounding environment, that is, of our planet. We all know how much easier it is to swim with the current rather than against it! This is why the practices of Qigong are aligned with the processes that occur in nature, with focus on the forces that initiate them. Qigong sees the world as a composition of five basic elements: Wood, Fire, Metal, Earth, and Water. These greatly influence our lives because we are a part of this world - a very complicated part! Aside from the fact that each of our organs works as "Yin" and "Yang", they are also guided by one of the elements mentioned above, and are even tied to the time of year which is regulated by this element. Furthermore, the organs are connected to certain times of day! Considering all this, to fully support the processes that occur in the body of a person, practitioners of the Tao developed five fundamental sets of exercises, which are traditionally done at corresponding times of the year.

THE FIVE FUNDAMENTAL SETS:

                                                               Spring Protocol

Heightening mobility and flexibility of the body. Energetic focus on the liver, gall bladder, and eyes. We work to extinguish the state of anger.

                                                               Summer Protocol

Activating the tone of life. Energetic focus on the system of the heart, blood vessels, and the small intestine. We emerge from "hibernation" or the feeling of stagnation.

                                                           Late Summer Protocol

Heightening optimism. Energetic focus on the stomach, pancreas, and spleen. We pacify our nagging sense of worry.

                                                               Autumn Protocol

Belief in oneself and good fortune. Energetic focus on the lungs and the large intestine, skin, and nose. We eliminate the baseless feeling of sorrow.

                                                               Winter Protocol

Launching the mechanisms of energetic reservoirs. Energetic focus on the kidneys, bladder, reproductive organs, and ears. We restore the musculoskeletal system. We expel needless fear.

Qigong to Live - a life realized in the balance of energy

With Tatiana Sedochenkova

I was introduced to the philosophy of Taoism by my father when I was just a girl. I was a happy child, raised in harmony with the mineral, plant, and animal worlds.

My father was Korean, although he was born and raised in Manchuria. I can recall the clear guidelines that he gave me when he became a master in the art of boxing, after he moved to Riga at the end of the Second World War. He taught me that in battle, it's not physical strength that matters most. What matters most is the vigor of spirit, speed of decision-making, and precision of the strike.

And I also remember how he told me that only Taoist practices helped him keep his sanity while he sat for 6 months in solitary confinement in a Soviet prison. He was placed there for fulfilling a private order in his other accomplished art - jewelry making.

In 1992, with my daughter and dog by my side, I moved to America. And shortly after I arrived I found myself fascinated with Carlos Castañeda and began to study his teachings. I discovered him only a few years before his death, and learned the practices of the Magical Passes, also known as Tensegrity. Our group exercises were focused on the gathering of energy.

Many years later, in 2007, I opened my own studio of spiritual dance. I taught moving meditation classes as well as chakra alignment classes. It was at this studio that I became acquainted with a Qigong instructor.

Of course I became very interested, but my business, which at that time was essential to my financial survival, did not permit me the time nor energy to dive into yet another spiritual practice.

But shortly after, life began to tease me again and I ended up at a seminar of "Fire Gong" taught by Master Zho. He was able to do amazing things. With his bare hands he rubbed a wet towel until it became hot with steam, and with a blade of a sword against his throat, he used the sword to push a cart full of bricks. I was left with a feeling that this man had tapped into the field that has historically been called magic.

Overall, my life then was then full of wonder and joy. I often went on backpacking trips to wild places, danced, learned how to play tennis. But things changed when in 2014, I was struck with unbearable back pain.

I could not even sweep the house! It was too painful to drive a car for even a half hour. And the results of the MRI scan brought me shocking news. The doctors discovered four herniated discs in my spine. Suddenly, I could no longer live the life I loved. I was left with a feeling of complete despair. "This is it," I realized, "I'm disabled."

Yet, as the daughter of my parents, I could not give up. And it was then that I consciously and finally delved into Qigong.

My practice began with a restorative program. Even at this level, I was already so inspired that I wanted to share these practices with so many others who need healing. I wanted to tell everyone who was in pain that their life is not over!

Just six months later, I was able to overcome the horrible prognosis of the doctors, and I felt completely restored. I began to dance again and run around the court with a racquet chasing a ball. I returned to the wilderness with a pack on my back and I could enjoy snowy mountains on skis!

And it was then that I began training to become a Qigong instructor and learned how to professionally share these teachings with others. I completed the training and I now hold a certificate of a Medical Qigong Instructor.

I am happy to wake up each morning, full of energy and excited to fulfill my purpose - to share these ancient teachings with other people, so that they may also feel great in this world of energy.
